How to feel natural in your wedding video

Feel more comfortable on camera, communicate your boundaries and enjoy a wedding film that reflects who you are as a couple.

You do not need to know how to pose or act to look natural in your wedding film. What helps is understanding how your team works, explaining what makes you uncomfortable and making room to be together without feeling you have to create a scene.

It is normal to notice the camera at first. The aim is not to force yourself to ignore it, but to find a comfortable way of being around it. You might be quiet, playful or reserved as a couple. None of those qualities needs correcting.

What should you discuss before the wedding?

Say if affection in front of others feels difficult, if you do not want to speak to camera or if some moments should stay private. Also explain what you enjoy: walking together, dancing or talking somewhere quiet.

Instead of asking for everything to look spontaneous, describe what that means to you. You might want very little direction, or you might appreciate a short suggestion because you do not know what to do. These are different needs, and both are worth discussing.

What should you do with your hands, and where should you look?

If you feel unsure, return to a familiar action. Holding hands, gently adjusting an item of clothing, walking or listening to your partner gives you something to focus on. These are options, not compulsory poses; choose what feels like you.

You do not have to look into the lens all the time. Ask when the team needs your attention and when you can simply continue what you are doing. A clear instruction is more helpful than trying to guess whether you look right.

Do you have to repeat kisses, hugs or emotions?

Discuss how much direction you feel comfortable with beforehand. If a suggestion does not fit the way you are together, say so and find another action. A small gesture that belongs to you can say more than an elaborate one that makes you uncomfortable.

Emotion is not an assignment. You do not have to cry during your vows, laugh in every shot or make every meeting a big moment. Allowing room for whatever happens helps the memory reflect the experience you actually had.

What if one of you enjoys the camera and the other does not?

Talk about it in advance and share a starting point with the team. You could discuss a short session, fewer people around or a few minutes somewhere quiet. The more comfortable partner can offer support without expecting the other to behave the same way.

Avoid comparing your relationship with the couples in a portfolio. Those films help you understand a filmmaker's perspective; they are not instructions for how you should act.

A simple way to prepare

  • Tell your team what helps you feel confident and what you would rather avoid.
  • Allow time to walk and talk without rushing to the next event.
  • Choose a comfortable setting for your time together.
  • Ask for a break if you need one.
  • Return your attention to each other when you find yourselves concentrating on the camera.

The aim is to recognise yourselves when you watch the film. Explore the ONIRIA films and tell us what you are like as a couple. If timing worries you, you can also read our guide to planning a relaxed wedding timeline for photos and video.
